The Rev. Jim Cato was ordained to the Vocational Diaconate on St. Barnabus Day 2016. He is a 1972 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in journalism and minors in history and foreign language. Jim served in the U.S. Army1965-1969. He studied Chinese Mandarin at the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, Calif., and was assigned to the National Security Agency at Fort George G. Meade, Md. He served in Vietnam 1968-1969. After graduating from USC, Jim worked as a photographer, reporter, editor and publisher for various S.C. newspapers for four decades, including 28 1/2 years at The Beaufort Gazette. Jim has served on short-term missions to the Dominican Republic, China, Kenya, Uganda and Vietnam. He and wife Susan lived and served in China for several years among the Ghao Xong Miao, an unreached people group in western Hunan Province. Hobbies include photography and cooking.
