Assistant for Music for Evening Worship, St. Michael’s Church, Charleston

St. Michael’s Church, Anglican, is the second oldest and the iconic church in the center of Charleston, SC. We seek to be a multi-generational church reaching people from all walks of life. In addition to our three morning services, we are in the midst of planning an evening worship service to reach those of college age and those returning to town for the work week. We are looking for an Assistant for Music to be the resident musician for this service. This assistant role is an 8 hour per week salaried position. Duties include developing a song list for this service, planning the music for each service, and leading the worshipers in song. Secondary responsibilities include setting up sound/musical equipment as necessary, finding a substitute in case of planned or unexpected absence, and seeking to be a full member of this service as demonstrated by getting to know attendees, participating in fellowship, etc. This role will begin with the incumbent as the sole musician for this service, so strong vocal and instrumental skills are required. We are looking for an Assistant for Traditional Music to be the regular assistant organist and substitute for the 11am Traditional Service. This assistant role is a 10 hour per week salaried position. Duties include accompanying the choir, joining the organ on piano for renewal and contemporary songs, and substituting for the Director of Music in case of planned or unexpected absence. Secondary responsibilities include providing occasional preludes or postludes, supporting the choir in recruiting, minor music library work, and being available as necessary for weekly choir rehearsals (currently Wednesday nights 6:30-8pm).
