Kairos Prison Ministry

Kairos is an international ministry staffed by volunteers, both men and women, drawn from a broad range of Christian Churches. The purpose of Kairos is to introduce Jesus Christ to inmates and to build strong Christian communities within the environment of correctional institutions. Kairos is active throughout many of the state men and women’s prisons in South Carolina.

The Kairos experience begins with a three-day short course in Christianity, beginning Thursday evening through to Sunday afternoon. The program is derived from the three-day Cursillo weekend. All team volunteers must have completed either, Cursillo, Walk to Emmaus or Tres Dias. The primary objective is to prepare participants for life in an ongoing Christian community. The weekend may be attended by up to forty-two inmate residents, chosen by the Chaplain and approved by the Warden. Every attempt is made to include both the positive and negative inmate leaders of the prison population. After the weekend a weekly or monthly reunion is established depending on the individual prisons’ schedule and involves the residents and trained volunteer team members. The inmate participants are encouraged, through talks and small group discussions to continue to strengthen their Christian walk. They are encouraged during these reunions to involve themselves in regularly scheduled small prayer and share groups in their prison environment.
