Doug Ringer was ordained as a Vocational Deacon by Bishop Chip Edgar in January 2024, following two years of Diocesan Diaconal Training, led by The Rev. Janet Echols. He is a member of St. Philip’s church where he and his wife of 57 years, Scharlene, have worshipped since moving into the Charleston area nearly nine years ago. Doug has been active in the St. Philip’s healing prayer ministry as well as serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. Doug is very grateful for the support and mentoring that the clergy of St. Philip’s has given him prior to and during the Diaconal training period. He leads a weekly Morning Prayer/Eucharist service at the Canterbury House in downtown Charleston, where he also is a newly appointed member of the board of Directors.

Doug is presently engaged as the Bishop’s Chaplain, accompanying and assisting Bishop Edgar on his official visits to various churches within the Diocese. He holds a B.S. from the University of South Carolina and an M.A. from Appalachian State University. Doug worked as a Special Agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) for several years before segueing into the CIA, where he was a case officer for 29 years before retirement. He was fortunate enough to have Scharlene working with him in the Agency. Doug and Scharlene are blessed to have two daughters and four grandchildren. One daughter is in TX, and the other lives on John’s Island, attending St. Johns Parish Church.
