Dr. Echols is a Virginia native, but grew up in Phoenix, AZ. He earned a BA in Economics with a minor in Religion from Whitman College, Walla Walla, WA (1984). After eleven years in management and sales with Nordstrom, he left to pursue graduate studies, earning an M.Div. with Honors from Trinity School for Ministry, Ambridge, PA (1999), an M.Lit. from the University of St. Andrews (2001), and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (2005). He moved with his family to Pune, India, where he was Visiting Professor of Biblical Studies at Union Biblical Seminary from 2008–2013. Since returning to the U.S., he has taught at Claflin University, the Global Online Anglican Seminary, South University, Cummins Memorial Theological Seminary, and Porter-Gaud School. He was ordained to the priesthood in The Anglican Diocese of South Carolina in 2016, and is currently Associate Rector at St. Matthew's Parish Church, Ft. Motte. He is the author of “Tell Me, O Muse”: The Song of Deborah (Judges 5) in the Light of Heroic Poetry (T&T Clark, 2008), Reading Ruth: A Guide to the Hebrew Text (2010), Reading Jonah: A Guide to the Hebrew Text (2013), and several articles and reviews. He lives in St. Matthews, SC, with his wife, Janet, and daughter, Grace, when she is home from university.
