DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paul Marshall\, Wilson Distinguished Professor of Religious Freedom at the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University will be offering  a public lecture at St. Philip’s Church\, Charleston on “Threats to Religious Freedom in the U.S.” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, February 14. All are invited to attend\, and to have the opportunity to meet the cohort of participants in the 10th  Anglican Leadership Institute. \n  \nAbout our Speaker: \nDr. Paul Marshall is a research professor in the Department of Political Science as well as the Jerry and Susie Wilson Chair in Religious Freedom at the Institute for Studies of Religion (ISR) at Baylor University. \nMarshall was formerly a Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom in Washington\, D.C. He is the author and editor of more than 20 books on religion and politics\, particularly religious freedom\, including Persecuted: The Global Assault on Christians (2013\, with Lela Gilbert and Nina Shea)\, Silenced: How Apostasy and Blasphemy Codes Are Choking Freedom Worldwide (2011\, with Nina Shea)\, Blind Spot: When Journalists Don’t Get Religion (2009)\, Religious Freedom in the World (2007)\, Radical Islam’s Rules: The Worldwide Spread of Extreme Sharia Law (2005)\, The Rise of Hindu Extremism (2003)\, Islam at the Crossroads (2002)\, God and the Constitution (2002)\, The Talibanization of Nigeria (2002)\, Massacre at the Millennium (2001)\, Religious Freedom in the World (2000)\, Egypt’s Endangered Christians (1999)\, Just Politics (1998)\, Heaven Is Not My Home (1998)\, A Kind of Life Imposed on Man (1996) and the best-selling\, award-winning survey of religious persecution worldwide Their Blood Cries Out (1997). \nMarshall’s current research is focused primarily on understanding how Muslims and Christians are able to live and work together peacefully in Indonesia – the world’s most populous Muslim country. \nMarshall is in frequent demand for lectures and media appearances and has been featured on ABC Nightly News; CNN; PBS; FOX; the British\, Australian\, Canadian\, South African and Japanese Broadcasting Corporations; and Al Jazeera. His work has been published in\, or is the subject of\, articles in The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Dallas Morning News\, The Christian Science Monitor\, First Things\, New Republic\, The Weekly Standard\, Reader’s Digest and many other newspapers and magazines. \nMarshall also is a Senior Fellow at the Leimena Institute\, a Christian public policy think tank in Jakarta\, Indonesia\, and was previously a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Sharif Hidayatullah Islamic University (UIN)\, also in Jakarta.

SUMMARY:St. Philip's Tea Room
DESCRIPTION:CHARLESTON\, SC — Historic St. Philip’s Church is pleased to announce the date and time of our 2019 Tea Room. This year our Tea Room will be open the week of April 29th-May 3rd\, 2019\, between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and will again offer a delicious Lowcountry lunch. The Tea Room is located in the Parish Hall and courtyard at the corner of Church and Cumberland Streets in downtown Charleston. \nEstablished in 1680\, St. Philip’s Church was the first Anglican church in South Carolina and is also the oldest parish in the state. It began at the corner of Meeting and Broad Streets\, now the site of St. Michael’s Church and moved to its current location in the early 1700s. Today its congregation includes parishioners whose families have worshiped at St. Philip’s for more than twelve generations and are among the many volunteers serving at the Tea Room. The tradition of the Tea Room started in 1952 as the “Tea Garden” by the Women’s Auxiliary and was then directed by Mrs. Carlton (Hattie) Davies.  The church is excited to continue the tradition again this coming year. \nAt this spring’s Tea Room\, Lowcountry luncheon favorites will return\, such as “Charleston Receipts” okra soup\, pimiento cheese\, classic chicken salad and shrimp salad.  A wonderful selection of desserts\, made by parishioners\, will include Hummingbird Cake\, Grand Marnier Cheesecake and Huguenot Torte as well as a wide variety of other treats. \nOnce again we are delighted to provide several dining choices for guests.  Due to its popularity guests may choose to take advantage of the Tea Room’s original 1952 outdoor format that allows them to dine outside in our beautiful courtyard or on our Parish Hall’s veranda.
